Society as a whole has become desensitized to how their actions affects others. As a teacher, this common standard is frustrating to see, and as a digital citizen it is even more frustrating. To see individuals not be respectful and responsible with their online activities can make attempts of good or exemplary digital citizens not rewarding.
An exemplary digital citizen should be RESPECTFUL. Demonstrate respect for yourself and others at all times. An individual who understands how to show and demonstrate respect while online will not use social media inappropriately, will not plagiarize, will not participate in questionable behavior, point blank. Our society as a whole has blurred the lines of respectful behavior and unfortunately this can be seen on a regular basis online. A digital citizen who demonstrates respectful behavior makes the online community better as a whole.
An exemplary digital citizen should be RESPONSIBLE. Every action has a consequence, either good or bad. Many people have become irresponsible with their actions daily. This is irresponsibility can be magnified online. People can hide and be manipulative in an online environment which allows them to further escape culpability for their actions. Exemplary digital citizens act responsibly in any and all online environments.
Finally, an exemplary digital citizen should help create a REWARDING online experience. Digital citizens that show respect and responsible behavior ultimately create a rewarding online experience for themselves. Additionally, they will make the online community as a whole rewarding for others because their ability to impact others positively with their actions and examples.
